You are correct. Since there is more overhead associated with the RS232 protocol there is a possibility of data over-run. In the original equipment interface, the high speed 429 bus loading was relatively light, so there was sufficient time for the converter to periodically catch up with the input. If the high sped bus is heavily loaded, the converter will start to drop data as the input circular buffer fills.
